We’re rapidly making our way through the SUPPORT acronym of the COMPLETE SUPPORT you deserve as a caregiver. We’ve already detailed the importance of Sustainability, Uncompromising (standards), Professionalism and Presence.
Today’s theme of ORGANIZED should be patently obvious. Do I really need to even ask the question? Apparently, the answer is yes.
If your experience is anything like mine, I was ironically the more organized of the two parties in a given eldercare situation despite how harried I felt. Disorder mostly occurred with consumer service providers as opposed to direct care providers (except hospitals). How about you?
What Are the Signs of DISORGANIZED?
See if you can relate to these examples. Crises borne of lack of planning on the part of the agency, organization or facility oddly wind up becoming yours. Tasks are left to the last minute, causing quality compromises. Unpleasant surprises that could have been prevented with proactivity are the norm. Interactions frequently feel rushed. Worst of all to me, you’re expected to respond “how high” when their chaos commands you to “jump”.
What Are the Hallmarks of ORGANIZATION?
Do you detest the above state of affairs as much as I do? Boy, oh boy. It makes my blood boil. So, let’s turn to the calm energy an organized provider offers. Ah…the breath of fresh air! They’re consistently on time and prepared for all conversations. Written status reports are provided when pertinent. You, as the client, may have your own tasks and deadlines. At least you know what those are and you’re extended plenty of lead time to fulfil them.
Questions for Reflection
Now it’s your turn. I invite you to consider these questions.
- What forms of ‘reporting’ do you require that demonstrate your provider is on top of your account?
- What types of unpleasant surprises would throw you off-track?
- What proactive measures do you need to identify, convey and hold your service provider accountable to?
